H.U.M occurred the first time, one earthly rotation ago on Virgina Woolf's estate… Wiltshire, UK… A festival… a
Hermetic installation, a synergetic triangle formed and DEPARTED… The Sound of the Spheres… In successive
breaths they re-formed and played gigs and sessions in London and Bristol tuning in to each other's sounds and
harmonizing to each other’s vibrations. They dreamt up a series of tours and adventures and went to Switzerland
for an Equinox ritual then > France and > back to the > UK and then on to Europe >>> Initiations, rites and
magical conjurations were performed. They spontaneously develop telepathic sensing and heightened perceptions.
The chemistry is of alchemical order… And so, they pursue further collaborations emanating and exchanging
vibratory energies, improvisation serving as a catalyst for expressive connection with the Universal Creative
Energy. It is the Vibratory force in motion which echoes between macro-microcosmos', the Music of the Spheres,
Harmony of the worlds, As above, So below… As a Trinity, Triad and Triangle they construct, sustain and
deconstruct sounds and processes, harness intuition, geometry and Symbolism </\> Each trip…
synchronicities and signs… A new space, new sounds, new systems, >> possibilities > exploration > performance
becomes a site specific ritual where emotion and thought collide and integrate <> They flow with the vibration,
blow with the cosmic winds… They confirm, combine, and concoct the elements < AU FEU AIR ETHER>,
United, they operate as Grand-Magus of Astral Magic, the sonic science of sound Mystics…

They invite you for a Soul Dance:

Los...Void...Clasp...Cloud...Hands...Eye...Sea...More...INFINITY…………………………………….……..

The Quietus

“After a lengthy hiatus (their last release was back in late 2012 by my count),
Bristolian noise merchant Bumtapes is up and running once again - and what a return!
This tape from pan European occult electronics band H.U.M. synthesizes devotional kosmische
with tribal drumming and lo fi percussive punches, turning cramped rehearsal rooms and studios into colossal cosmic chambers.

Fuzzy, echo-laden male spoken word is in a constant state of spew,
intoning prayer-speak and psychedelic gibberish in French and English
as if channeling the late Bob Calvert,or even Arthur Brown circa Klaus Schulze's epochal Dune:
"From times eternal and since it all began, we are all as one, we breathe as one."

The instrumentation is mostly twisted nearly out of recognition
via dubby effects and distortion, save some ritualistic percussion and the odd droning keyboard.
'Mysteria Mystica Maxima' swirls every atonal element together, concocting an almost poisonous brew in the process,
while 'Fête Mûmûse' eliminates almost all but the muddily distended sound of the voice.
The opening 'Thōout' sees H.U.M. at their most overtly tribalesque, bashing out mystic rhythms in a devilish invocation.
The ritual reaches its apex on the maddeningly good nine-minute closer, 'Eté Eternelle'.
For the first six minutes, the trio build a demonic drum circle rhythm and droning keyboards,
before the crescendo cuts early, and the final minutes of the tape see melodic French chanting over a two chord drone go head to head with zapping sound effects via hijacked delay pedals.”

_2016_ TRINTY WAY, LP on ROCKET RECORDINGS

listen /> orderings >> v

http://h-u-m.bandcamp.com/album/trinity-way

▲ ▲ ▲ ▲ ▲ ▲ ▲

H.U.M. marks the convergence of a triad of kindred spirits with a common goal of expanding consciousness.
On Trinity Way their debut release for Rocket Recordings, the cosmic/terrestrial musician/magician triumvirate of Héloïse Zamzam, Olmo Uiutna and Mark Wagner delve into ritualistic audial travelogues which unite mantric repetition, concrète noise and kosmische explorations, the better to transform and enrich the soul. As Héloïse relates, “As researchers we like to leap into the great unknown to find something new. H.U.M. is a place where we can transpose and explore our energy in motion and let ourselves drift away to our visions".

All three acolytes of H.U.M. arrive at this destination from a rich history of experimental music and art - Héloïse and Olmo run the formerly Bristolian and now French-based Zamzamrec , which besides being a record label specialising in tape releases by artists working in psychedelic realms and beyond, they characterise as “a superfuture network, a community of musicians, storytellers, scientists, writers, poets and dreamers”. Mark Wagner, meanwhile, has involved himself in a diverse and vibrant litany of projects, most recently touring as a member of GNOD, and Ahrkh Wagner and is an active practitioner of music as a spiritual medium.

They first spontaneously merged together at the Woolf Festival in Wiltshire, forging a free improvisatory union which they then took on tour to spread as sonic philosophy through Europe and the UK. Following the limited edition cassette We Are One on the Bumtapes label, Trinity Way marks the most expansive and intrepid ascension yet for these psychic travellers, using primal rhythm, earthly resonances and devotional oratory as pathways to uncharted dimensions and higher metaphysical realms.

These trance-like meditations and illuminating visions draw on a plethora of earthly parallels, from the iconoclastic writing of Rimbaud or Artaud to the occultist sound-world of Coil, from the invigorating DIY ethos of the Not Not Fun label to the anarchic sprawl of The Faust Tapes, and with Wagner’s stream-of-consciousness incantations inviting comparisons to both Robert Calvert and Genesis P-Orridge. Yet influences come also for further afield, as testified by ‘l’Âme agit’, a mysterious rework and ode to Françoise Hardy’s French pop classic ‘Comment te dire adieu’ or on ‘Cat-man-do’ which uses Héloïse’s recordings of a shamanic initiation in the Colombian jungle to help conjure an overwhelming air of hypnotic momentum.

Altogether on another wavelength from most of which is dubbed psychedelic music in the seond decade of the 21st Century, Trinity Way is a free-flowing odyssey of vivid, hallucinatory intensity. Yet through a marriage of simple ingredients, these three have created an off-the-map album which nonetheless places its feet on the ground and its gaze on the cosmos. As Héloïse herself says; “Trinity Way is a magic door, a sonic portal. Trinity Way is not an escape of the everyday realm but an entrance, a mode, an invitation…”

_______REVIEWz_______

H.U.M. - Trinity Way
(Rocket)

Let's begin in suitably cosmopolitan style with a pan-European project which goes by the name of H.U.M. Its members are Gnod associate Mark Wagner, the Italian-born Olmo Uiutna and France's Héloïse Zamzam. Trinity Way's opening track is all ominous drones, spacey swirling sounds, random percussive chimes and spoken-word lyrics evoking Michael Moorcock's Hawkwind guest spots. The word "love" is chanted several times which is a pleasant enough sentiment but the creepy music suggests that this hippy fiesta is on the verge of inverting to its Manson-esque flipside of abuse, indoctrination and violence. You can imagine the vocal track was recorded while wearing blood-red robes embroidered with patterns of goats. The following number is sung in French which makes the vibe extra suave/ sophisticated/ sexy/ Satrean/ sinister/ shiraz-sozzled (delete according to your own prejudices). It's actually a reworking of Françoise Hardy's 'Comment Te Dire Adieu' that's been rendered completely unrecognisable from the Austin Powers-friendly pop ditty original and twisted into something significantly more unearthly. 'Welcome To The Sea', meanwhile, is part-Stooges, part-Coil and part bad-trip poetry slamdown and elsewhere there's a whole lotta chanted avant-garde occult-ritual drone work, including a climactic composition which sounds like a transistor radio trying to hypnotise some bagpipes into suffocating Current 93's David Tibet as he sleeps soundly on his bed of nails.

H.U.M

Trinity Way (LP/CD/Download from Rocket Recordings www.rocketrecordings.com

Featuring members of Zam Zam and Moon Ra, H.U.M’s label debut Trinity Way (well there are three of them after all) is an exercise in experimental electronica overlaid with mostly spoken-word vocals evoking the likes of Coil/PTV, label-mates Gnod and even Faust in the darker recesses.

It would be stretching many a point to say I was suckled to the strains of Hawkwind’s “Space Ritual”, but L.O.V.E is definitely redolent of that brand of cosmic poetry which Bob Calvert was wont to spout between songs and is none the worse for it.  It manages to sound powerful and atmospheric without needing to resort to the volume dial or to stretch much beyond sparse rhythm and accompaniment. “L’Ame Agit” (as French as it sounds) continues in similar if somewhat darker vein, an homage of sorts to a Francoise Hardy song, although you’d be hard pressed to recognise it as that. Its hypnotic clanking beat brings to mind Einsturzende Neubauten as well as the prime purveyors of England’s reverse. “Cat Man Do” (can you see what they’ve done there?) uses recordings of shamanic initiation to heighten the trance-like momentum while “Welcome To The Sea” sounds like Depeche Mode’s Kool-Aid has been slipped a few hundred mics. Insistent and shamanic too in its own sweet (hah!) way. “A Maze In Grace” continues the tendency towards pun-tastic songtitles and is a tingling crystalline sliver of chilled ambience, the calm at the eye of a brooding tempest. “Eternally Yours” is a fitting finale (leastways to the listed tracks) featuring what sounds like bag pipes and that insistent and ominous delivery. It all ends with a couple of percussive hits before reprising “L’Ame Agit”. Then it’s gone and it won’t be long before you want to get toxic with it all over again. One of the top 5 albums of the year so far.

Trinity Way is the debut album from H.U.M. (the initials of Héloïse Zamzamrec, Olmo Uiutna and Mark Wagner). The band view the album as ‘a magic door, a sonic portal’ and that they have ‘a common goal of expanding consciousness.’
Being as they are also on Rocket Recordings and have some connections with Gnod these sound like genuine possibilities.

Unfortunately, for me at least, Trinity Way doesn’t quite do it. The band’s sound is a combination of ritualistic noise, Free Jazz percussion and  trance-like rhythms (quite like early Current 93 and similar bands from that post-Throbbing Gristle time in the early ‘80s). Over the top of this the lyrics are intoned rather than sung. The lyrics themselves pull quotes from The Bible, The Quran, Hindusim, Hermeticism as well as from pop songs (A-ha and The Korgis in L.O.V.E.). So we've simultaneously got primal sounds, high ideas and pop lyrics. And H.U.M. try to combine them all to create a kind of transcendental/transformative experience. They do this to varying degrees of success throughout Trinity Way. The tracks that work best for me are the instrumental Cat-Man-Do, which is based on a Shamanic initiation and builds and builds, taking you with it; and L'Ame Agit (based on Francoise Hardy's 'Comment Te Dire Adieu') which mixes evil hum and an electronic pulse before breaking into a slow groove which, again, takes you with it.

The lyrics to L’Ame Agit are all in French and it’s no coincidence that the two songs that I engage with most don't have lyrics that I can understand. I find the lyrics on this album a little difficult. Not bad, just difficult. I find the quoting and punning (A Maze In Grace) a little distracting. I also feel that the expansion of consciousness that they are reaching for is so universal and fundamental that it is simultaneously complex and basic (like trying to describe love) and the more you try to explain it the further away you get. That is why simple sayings like 'I am that I am' and 'That which is above is like that which is below' (both quoted in the lyrics) work - we understand them instinctively without recourse to too much distracting thought.

I think that it is laudable and right that bands attempt to expand our consciousness or take us on a trip – some of the best music in the world has been created for this reason - but on Trinity Way I find that the consciousness-expanding lyrics distract me from the thing that I find genuinely consciousness-expanding which is the music. As seen on Cat-Man-Do H.U.M. are capable of building a ritualistic improvisation that can take you on a journey. They are also capable of meandering a bit (A Maze In Grace). These are the pitfalls for any band that sets themselves these challenges, from The Grateful Dead onwards. When it works it’s brilliant, when it doesn’t it’s a bit dull.

If you can imagine an industrial underworld inhabited by swans, throbbing gristle & the haxan cloak, this might be their collaborative soundtrack. On their debut release for the infallible Rocket Recordings, Héloïse Zamzamrec, Olmo Uiutna & Mark Wagner's (a touring member of GNOD) trance-like meditations & illuminating visions draw on a plethora of earthly parallels, from the iconoclastic writing of Rimbaud or Artaud to the occultist sound-world of Coil, from the invigorating DIY ethos of the Not Not Fun label to the anarchic sprawl of The Faust Tapes & with Wagner’s stream-of-consciousness incantations inviting comparisons to Robert Calvert or Genesis P-Orridge. immense!

H.U.M, a three-piece group comprised of (H)eloise Zamzam, Olmo (U)iutna and (M)ark Wagner, are soon to release their eagerly-awaited debut Trinity Way on Rocket Recordings, and above you can check out the first taste of the album in the form of 'L’ame Agit', six-minutes of dread-filled, droning guitars and, as you might predict, French vocals .

The trio originally met at Woolf Festival in Wiltshire, where they agreed to form a band based on improvisation. From there, they toured Europe and the US and subsequently released a limited edition cassette entitled We Are One on the Bumtapes label these shows and a selection of tracks gathering steam on the way.

All three members have a rich pedigree in experimental music and art. Heloise and Olmo run a label called Zamzamrec, which was formerly based from Bristol but now run in France. They describe their label as "a superfuture network, a community of musicians, storytellers, scientists, writers, poets and dreamers." Wagner could recently be found touring as a member of GNOD.

Trinity Way, according to the band, contains influences from French writers Arthur Rimbaud and Antonin Artaud, the fiercely independent spirit of the Not Not Fun label and The Faust Tapes. H.U.M. play live as part of the Gnod Weekender at the Lexington this Sunday (April 10). You can get tickets for that here.
